Coping With Post-Traumatic
Stress
Learn more about post-traumatic stress and how to
cope with it.
When a person is believed to have posttraumatic stress disorder,
this person has to endure a higher degree of stress than all
the average individuals. If you are lucky and survive, a survivor
of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) will have to go through
the pain of certain flashbacks, avoid society, suffer panic
attacks or run from stress. This person will suffer a higher
level of stress since trauma provokes the attacks and therefore
causes the psychological break. Other than be sympathetic,
you can basically do nothing more for a person diagnosed with
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, since I too am a survivor.
Here, I will share with you how did I go through the phase
.Most of all, it is very important to learn stress management
techniques and pick up positive attitudes in life. Whenever
there is presence of negative situation, you will then know
how to cope with the stressors yourself. Learning how to relax
is one of they keys of stress management. You should spare
some time each day and relax yourself. When you are overwhelmed
by stress, spend some time in visiting a friend and catch
up what you have been missing out. Or, simply go to a place
that will take your minds off all the stress and somewhere
you know you will be safe from all the stress and harm, which
is, a method of disassociation. Like what the term suggests,
it means you will disassociate yourself from all your problems,
people, and even yourself. Close you eyes after you have found
a comfortable position and vision yourself in an imaginary
land where everyone is loving, kind, and where no stress exists.
Have a few imaginary friends to join you in a peaceful room
and sit with them talking through your problems. Remember,
this will be free of fear and no one is going to hurt you
and you have absolutely full control. Avoid the problems that
exist that are causing you the extreme stress by allowing
the other person (s) in the room to tell you how they are
dealing with their problems. Let them share with you the many
problems they face and simulate some scenes so that everyone
can see a solution.
Sometimes, solution can be found through the simplest way.
Pretend that you live in a friendly and kind world, and there
is only absolute peace and everything is perfect. The only
problems you have are everyday living, including your job,
house, family, and friends. The world is moving accordingly.
Now, you can role play the scenes and help each other to resolve
their issues in a non-violence way. After some time, you will
then see things in a positive way that will eliminate all
your problems. Repeat the process and recite if necessary
until you find some inner peace and relief. However, this
might not work the same for everyone, you need to find out
what works best for you.
Multiple Personality Disorder shows symptoms of disassociation,
which is totally different from the common person. There is
no imaginary world involved because the person is living in
a world where real tragedy occurred and dealing with it by
utilizing segments of a personality. This type of disorder
will utilize the entire brain, rather than the common usage
of brain 25% or less. It is perfectly fine to go into an imaginary
land as long as you realize it is just imagination, and when
you come out, you know that the problems are real.
Another helpful stress management tip for PTSD survivors
is to exercise regularly, eat a proper diet, stay consistent,
and avoid areas were there could be triggers to your stress.
For example, if you have a friend who constantly hits on your
triggers each time on your visit, then you should know that
you have to give this type of friend a pass. And also, you
are advised to avoid areas where loud sounds can trigger the
emotions, cause flashbacks and increase your stress level.
You may want to read all the material available to help you
to understand your diagnose better, since this will provide
you the suitable tips for handling stress and problems you
might encounter. Most importantly, it is important to stay
away from alcohol and drugs because this will only provoke
the stress level and promote interruptions of the emotions.
When a person drinks, that person thinks. This means what
you were trying to avoid in the first place may crop up in
between. You must understand that, alcohol attacks the nerves.
The nerves are already affected if you have PTSD; therefore,
it is best for you to avoid stressors that only boost your
stress level.
