Stock Supplies for Diabetics
Today, more and more people realize that there is no cure
for diabetes and the best they can do when handling this sweet
killer is to reduce the damage by taking their medicines regularly,
and lead a more disciplined life.
It has been shown that 17 million Americans are suffering
from diabetes. These patients definitely need proper advice
and an authentic medical outlet to get their diabetes supplies.
Already scores of vendors started shops, both offline and
online in order to provide diabetes supplies. The insurance
companies as well have got into the act and have drawn up
a list of items for which policy holders can make claims.
Insulin, Insulin Pumps and Syringes: Insulin
is usually prescribed when a diabetes patient has tried out
all the traditional channels of medication. The patient should
know that there is no turning back once the patient is given
insulin. Luckily, the patient need not visit a dispensary
or a hospital in order to get his daily or weekly quota of
insulin. Instead, the patient can take the insulin directly
either by injecting it through a syringe or by using the insulin
pump.
The devices available include insulin delivery syringes,
insulin pens, jet injectors, external insulin pumps, implantable
insulin pumps and insulin inhalers. The patient has the right
to decide which device suits him more, both physical convenience
and costs.
The patient has to know where insulin can be bought, because
certain types of insulin can only be bought either from a
pharmacy or a drug company.
Blood Glucose Meter, lancets and testing strips:
Every diabetes patient has to buy a blood glucose meter. He
must also stock a full supply of lancets and testing strips
to allow him to test the sugar levels frequently There are
several testing meters available today, such as OneTouch,
Accu-Chek and FreeStyle. The testing is an important part
of controlling diabetes as it can help the patient regulate
the sugar levels. Hence, the patient must never compromise
on this key diabetes control kit, and should always carry
it with him.
Emergency Supplies: Diabetes patients must
always carry on their person a small amount of glucose which
can be taken in case of an attack of hypoglycemia. Besides,
they should always keep sweet juice, honey or candy at easily
reachable places in their homes or office in case of such
emergencies.
The patients are also encouraged to carry medical identity
papers to enable passers by to extend help in emergencies.
The patients who are more prone to serious hypoglycemic conditions
must stock injectable glucagon which can be injected if the
patient faints.
Diabetic snack bars: A recent development
has been the manufacturer of diabetic snacks. Such food bars
are not meant to check attacks of hypoglycemia but to prevent
it. Not only that, they can also be used as part of regular
meal to stock up sugar supply.
Skin cream: Another useful diabetes resource
is skin cream which comes in useful during travel, and saves
the patient unnecessary pain.
