Diagnosis Of Insomnia

Understand The Different Causes, Types And Diagnosis Of Insomnia To Get Some Quality Sleep

Insomnia, which refers to the inability to fall asleep at night or to sleep soundly throughout the night, it can be temporary or persistent and there are many causes behind insomnia. Insomnia that is temporary is more commonly known as as transient. If insomnia lasts longer than a few days or even a few weeks, it usually will be classified as permanent.

Women usually suffer the effects of insomnia more than men do, probably it is because of the many hormonal changes women experience. On top of that, because of other factors such as a sedentary lifestyle or an underlying medical condition or as a side effect of prescription medication, insomnia may increase with age.

Temporary insomnia can result from too much stress, or from crossing into different time zones, as well as from environmental factors such as an increase in noise levels or temperature variations of more than a few degrees. Besides, if you are constantly exposure to excessive light or loud and/or persistent noise including nearby traffic and even loud snoring by your partner can create an environment which your sleep is disturbed. Insomnia can even be the result of learned behavior.

Generally, there is no need for medical treatment for intermittent or temporary insomnia. This will recover or improve when the individual takes control of the problems that cause his or her insomnia.

There is another serious problem with sleeping issues, which are the permanent or chronic insomnia. The degree of severity depends heavily on the root cause. So, for the victim of chronic insomnia, they should firstly meet their health care providers to narrow down or find out the real reason of their sleeping disorder.

The other reasons that might cause chronic insomnia include use of drugs, caffeine or by shift work. Or it could be due to some physical or mental disorders including depression, anxiety, kidney disease, heart trouble, restless leg syndrome, asthma, Parkinson's disease or even a condition called sleep apnea. In fact, there are even more reasons why someone is not able to sleep soundly constantly.

Although the process of finding out the root cause might be a long process that has to go through numerous tests and evaluations, but it has to be taken care of. Once the cause is known, it will be easier to identify whether medical treatments are required or whether the insomnia can be treated by changing their daily habits. Sometimes, alleviating insomnia could be as easy as eliminating caffeine several hours before bedtime.

Diagnosing insomnia can be ever trickier than diagnosing an underlying condition because sleep in general is very subjective. The hours of sleep that each individual needs varies. But, generally, for those who have difficulty remaining alert, focused and able to concentrate during the day are most likely to be suffering insomnia.

There are several ways to help you, such as keeping a sleep journal, answering a number of sleep-related questions and evaluating the answers or seeing a sleep specialist are some of the tools that can help diagnose insomnia and overcome the issue slowly.
