It has always been the good-old dilemma: how to lose weight
without feeling deprived?
For the most of us, food is much more than fuel. Food is
social, since most of the gatherings we have provide food,
especially on festive occasions. Food is also comfort, or
even entertainment, both in terms of its preparation and its
consumption. Most of all, food is also about family and culture.
We may take pride our family food tradition, things that we
remember a grandparent making, dishes that we ate as children.
It is indeed hard to ask people to give up on any of these
pleasures.
An alcoholic can give up drinking by just never taking a
drink again, it might be hard but at least its simple and
clear cut. As for those who try to get rid of fats, it is
hard because we cannot give up eating totally. We need to
eat to live. That makes food addiction and weight problems
a particularly difficult situation to deal with for some people.
There is one solution that has worked for many of us: which
is keep on eating your favorite foods at the designated times,
but prepare lower fat versions of them. If you were to choose
between adding a fat, or extra flavor with spices and herbs,
always go for the flavor. In this way, you can avoid feeling
deprived, at the same time maintaining good nutrition and
preserve the social aspects of food and eating that are so
important to us all. You can lose weight and as well as lowering
your cholesterol level at the same time.
It will not be as hard as you think especially with all the
products available nowadays. For example, if you’re
cooking meat, make sure that you choose leaner cuts to reduce
the fat and cholesterol in your food. For a start, just use
just a little bit of olive oil for cooking on a non-stick
pan. Chances are, you’ll never miss the fat content.
You can also substitute 1% milk for 2% or whole, most people
will not be able to identify the difference, though skim milk
is too thin to be used in many recipes.
If you like omelets or quiche, you can avoid consuming excess
fat and cholesterol by using only the egg whites. If you think
it is wasteful, you can always buy egg whites in a container,
so that you don’t have to throw away yolks. There is
low fat cheese on the market to add to these dishes, but unlike
some low fat products, it is usually flavorless. If you really
don’t like them, you can go for the high quality and
flavorful cheese such as parmesan or asiago, or blue cheese
if you like it, and use just a bit. If the flavor is strong,
a little will go a long way.
Another example would be, try adding a lot of salt when cooking
pasta, then you can use less sauce and cheese to have it taste
good. Instead of putting butter on popcorn, try soy sauce
instead because it will give extra flavor, and some moisture,
which is important. Many of us, when trying to cut out butter,
find unbuttered popcorn too dry to be palatable. Soy sauce
helps to reduce this problem, and some people end up preferring
it that way.
However, you should know that none of these will be a weight
loss miracle. Of course, you will lose weight for sure if
you apply them consistently. Eventually, you will benefit
from better health and weight loss without feeling deprived,
or eliminating the pleasure that you get from your food.
