Tips & Precautions For Exercises For Diabetics

If you are a diabetic, exercise will help greatly in controlling your blood sugar levels. Not only that, if you are overweight or obese and diabetic, exercise will also help you lose weight and improve your condition of diabetes.

Being a diabetic also means you need to exercise extra precautions and considerations before you begin any exercise routine. It is better than you ask for your doctor’s approval to prevent risk and injuries. And once you have begun, you always need to be aware of the risks involved.

Always wait before your exercise if your blood glucose level is too low or high because you can do more damage than good if you do not. It is particularly dangerous if your blood sugar is on the low side and you start to exercise.

This is because the physical action can cause your blood sugar to drop even further and when it happens it is a critical and emergency situation. As a precaution, if you are working out at a gym then it is better for you to inform the staff about your condition
and have emergency instructions and numbers to call.

However, if you walk or run on your own alone, then you need to keep identification on you that advises you are diabetic along with contact phone numbers, a snack, as well as instructions.

If you need to know other tips on exercising with diabetes, you can follow the same guidelines that make sense for everyone else. Always do some stretching before exercising, and, make it a habit to drink plenty of fluids and never push yourself to the extreme. Always check your blood sugars before and after exercising and if you are feeling light-headed during your work-out check it then too.

As feet problems are common in diabetics, therefore you need to wear proper footwear and socks. If you feel any sores on your feet that are refuse to disappear, then consult your doctor immediately. When they do not heal on their own, they can lead to an infection and other related complications. Even though there are certain risks involved to exercising, the benefits make it worth it.
