Flu
Fighting The Flu Demon
One day in the summer, when my daughter played outside in
the grass, I noticed that she was becoming a little aggressive,
mean, and a little harder to manage than her usual self.
I thought she was getting tired of the heat, so I took her
inside and put her down for her afternoon nap. It was nice
to have some time to myself when she was sleeping. She slept,
and slept, and slept, and slept. After 3 hours of napping,
I became a little concerned.
When I went into her room to check on her, she was still
sleeping. So I walked over to her crib and bent over the railing
to put my hand on her and make sure she was okay. I immediately
noticed that she looked a little flushed, so I shook her awake.
Her eyes opened but groggy, so I picked her up and found her
to be burning hot! It was like sticking my hand on the oven
door!
I immediately removed all of her clothes, gave her some juice,
and rechecked her temperature. I got the shock of my life
when I read the rectal thermometer; she had a fever of 104
degrees! I screamed for my husband and he came running.
We then rushed her to her pediatrician’s office and
she was quickly diagnosed with the flu! I was mortified! It
was hard to believe that my little girl could be so sick.
Sure, the flu isn’t such a big deal in young adults
who are healthy and strong enough to fight off the virus,
but in toddlers, it’s another different story.
They gave my daughter prescriptions for an anti-viral, a
fever reducer, and pain relievers. She was almost a walking
pharmacy! Once we got her home, gave her the appropriate medicine,
all we could do was keep her hydrated, cool, and comfortable
and let the medicine do its work. After a night of constantly
comforting, sleeplessness, cleaning up vomit, giving her juice,
making sure her fever was staying down.
When your child is so sick, all your could do is, to comfort
her and be patient.
