The Scary H5N1 Influenza Prevention Tips

What is influenza or flu virus? It is defined as an “acute viral infection which involves the respiratory system; an acute febrile and highly contagious disease”. There are many types of influenza and all of them belong to the influenza A virus. And then there is the H5N1 influenza which has destroyed my life and my daughter’s life.

The deviation in the virus makes the name of the sub-type. This virus consists of two types of proteins and their variation indicates the type of virus. Therefore, there are H1N1, H1N2 and H3N3 virus. The latest on the list is the H5N1 influenza which is also more commonly known as the avian flu or bird flu.

The Symptoms Of The Flu

The symptoms of the flu include chills and fever, headaches, body aches, runny nose, dry cough, loss of appetite, weakness, irritation, fatigue and etc. The virus can be transmitted in many forms, and they are usually air borne. However, it can also be passed through hand shakes, sharing of hankies, plates, spoons, water glasses, and so on.

The H5N1 influenza is crossed over from birds to humans through the mixing of bird excreta with the mucus of the humans. For instance, say someone was cleaning the coops of the chicken. And when he is done, took something to eat without washing hands. Bingo, he put the H5N1 influenza virus right in the mouth, or even scratched their eyes and sends the virus in the body through the eye mucus.

How to Prevent It?

Now, read some simple steps to prevent this disease easily.

1. Always protect your mouth and face by covering it with a handkerchief. Handshake is the fastest way to spread the disease and then forgetting to wash it
2. Since most of the germs would be on the hands, so, always wash your hands thoroughly.
3. Try to quarantine the sick where there is no outside contact
4. Do not leave your home if you are sick as you could infect others
5. Do not touch others when your hands are not washed.
6. In case of your area is affected by the avian flu (H5N1 influenza) do not touch any bird since they could be infected
