How Do We Control Heart Disease Risk Factors?

Although we can’t control heart disease totally, but, there are certain heart disease risk factors that we can do something about. There are things that we can do that are preventative in nature, things we do to reduce the risk, and then there are those heart disease risk factors that are beyond our control.

Preventative Tips

A heart disease risk factor includes the habit of smoking. A habitual smoker doubles to quadruples their heart disease risk factor over whom that do not smoke. Hence, a preventative measure to reduce your heart disease risk factor is to quit smoking, reduce your cigarette intake, or eliminate altogether.

Excessive weight gain is another heart disease risk factor for most people. Obesity will lead to heart disease. This excess weight puts extra stress and burden upon the heart which causes this cardiac muscle to work harder than what is necessary. Not only that, extra weight will contribute to other medical conditions that are detrimental to the condition of the heart. Those medical conditions can include diabetes, hypertension and increased levels of cholesterol.

Being physically active is one of the preventive tips to reduce heart disease risk factor. An active lifestyle will help to stimulate and strengthen the cardiovascular system, maintain weight control, greatly reduce cholesterol levels and keep blood pressure under control.

Being Informative

Being informative is the second key element in reducing the heart disease risk factor. This education can be accomplished in several ways.

Always have your cholesterol level regularly checked, keeping track of your HDL, LDL and triglyceride levels you will be informed. By being aware can help you to adjust your diet accordingly and make other adjustments as needed to bring any adverse levels back to normalcy.

Keeping an eye on your blood pressure is another way to minimize your heart disease risk factor, be very educated about your own blood pressure level so you will know if your blood pressure begins to rise. When your blood pressure levels begin to rise, you will be able to quickly respond with ways to lower that blood pressure. Those specific methods of reducing blood pressure can include watching your diet, managing your stress, exercising, etc.

Factors Beyond Control

Besides, there are also heart disease risk factors beyond our control. Men usually have greater risk of heart attack than women. Heart attack may occur at an early age. If you are female, you heart disease risk factor is increased following menopause and is significant in the latter portion of your life.

Age is also another heart disease risk factor beyond our control. As we are, the more prone to heart disease we become. This risk factor is simply based on the person’s longevity of life.

Last but not least, another heart disease risk factor is our heredity. Heredity is running in our blood. It has been proven that children, whose parents suffered from heart disease, have greater risk to inherit the medical condition of their parents.
