Of Excessive Hair Growth
Hirsutism is a medical condition which results in extreme
hair growth on the face or body. This condition has been seen
in both genders, though it is seen more commonly in females.
Women who suffer from hirsutism will usually have thick hair
grown on their face, chest, stomach, and back.
There are a few known causes of hirsutism, which includes
overwhelming levels of male hormones (androgens). Besides
hirsutism, there are also other symptoms of excessive male
hormones such as acne, irregular menstruation, deepness of
the voice, and increased muscle mass. Other than excessive
quantities of male hormones, some cases of hirsutism are caused
by hair follicles which overreact to the minute quantities
of male hormones which occur naturally in some of the women.
Some of the medications might also cause male hormones such
as birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, and anabolic
steroids, and etc. The symptoms are usually temporary and
disappear when you stop taking the medications that are causing
it.
There is also proof to indicate that hirsutism may be inherited
as symptoms have been seen appearing in multiple generations
of females. And, do not confuse yourself with hirsutism should
and hypertrichosis which is a condition where excessive hair
growth happens in areas of the body where visible hair is
not normally present.
Treatment Of Hirsutism
Excessive male hormones can also be triggered by being overweight.
If you are overweight, you should seek help from doctor for
a diet and exercise plan. Your hormone levels will usually
drop together with your weight. You can also shave the affected
area, but you have to shave it regularly if you want to avoid
the appearance of 'stubble'.
Depilatories, or hair removal creams are also good solutions
to hair removal. Before you apply this method, you should
always test your skin's reaction to these chemicals first
by applying a small dab to the inside of your wrist and wait
for at least 24 hours to see if you have an allergic skin
reaction.
There are also people who prefer to use a bleaching product
that will make the hair fairly invisible. Similar to depilatories,
you could experience a reaction, so apply a small amount as
a test and wait 24 hours.
However, you should avoid plucking or waxing the affected
areas because this action tends to stimulate hair growth by
increasing blood flow and the result will turn out opposite
of what you want.
Some people choose to undergo either electrolysis, that kills
the hair follicle with a small charge of electricity, or laser
hair removal that make use of a tiny laser beam to destroy
the follicles and force the hair to fall out. But, these two
methods are costly and side effects may include rash, skin
discoloration, and scaring. Home electrolysis kits are basically
useless.
If you go to your doctor, he or she might recommend the prescription
of an anti-androgen medication which helps to reduce male
hormone levels and, hence, slow down the growth of new hair.
No matter which method that you choose, just keep in mind
that hirsutism can be treated and you do not have to live
with the unwanted hair growth if you don't want to.
