Infertility In Males
What Causes Male Infertility?
The causes of infertility generally can be grouped into three
factors: fertility problems in the woman, in the man and in
both partners. Infertility in males usually occurs either
because of structural problems or problems with sperm production.
Structural Infertility In Males
Sperm are produced in the testes and will travel a long and
complex path to get to an egg. Blockages can happen anywhere
along the way. The spermatic ducts could be blocked, or the
vas deferens. Besides that, the other structural abnormalities
that affect infertility in males are such as poor semen production
as well as abnormalities in the penis itself. Low sperm count
could also be one of the reasons of male infertility.
Most of the time, structural problems can be repaired, and
normal fertility restored. Even if the problem cannot be repaired,
the man may still be able to father children. Artificial insemination
with collected sperm, in vitro fertilization, and injecting
the sperm into the woman’s fallopian tube together with
an egg are some of the technologies available to help with
infertility.
Spermatic Infertility In Males
Spermatic infertility in males means not enough sperm or
by “poor quality” sperm.
If the sperm count is low, hormonal therapy or artificial
reproductive technology is there to make possible for the
man to father children.
If sperms are absent, the underlying cause may still be treated,
but, if the man simply does not produce sperm, the couple
will need to depend on donor sperm in order to conceive.
Infertility in males is often because the sperm have minor
deformities that keep them from fertilizing an egg. It could
be that they are not active enough or they simply can’t
penetrate the egg.
When sperm quality is a problem, infertility can be treated
with intracytoplasmic sperm injection. During this procedure,
a single sperm is injected microscopically into an egg.
Causes Of Male Infertility
Sometimes, it is hard to identify a cause for a man’s
infertility. However, the more common causes of infertility
in males include:
1. Infection, including mumps and sexually transmitted diseases,
may infect the testes and cause sterility.
2. Chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart
disease, these are the diseases that may interfere with blood
flow to the penis and eventually interferes with sperm production
and delivery.
3. Erectile dysfunction which prevents the sperm from getting
to the egg.
The testes and penis are relatively exposed and vulnerable
to exposure to environmental toxins, such as insecticides
and radiation, which is no surprise that might cause male
infertility. Besides, the injury to testes might also cause
infertility in males as well.
Infertility in males has many causes, and most of them can
be treated. Even when it is not, the couple still stands the
chance to conceive using donor sperm.
