Influenza Treatment
Understanding The Treatment for Influenza
Most of the healthy persons will not have influenza which
lasts more than a week to ten days and the worst case symptoms
also lasts for three to four days. In cases like this, home
treatment is all required to prevent complications and ease
the symptoms. Influenza treatment may be taken to reduce the
duration of symptoms and also to reduce severity that may
be a result of influenza A or B virus as well as reducing
the duration of the illness.
Influenza treatment is needed to control outbreaks of flu
in nursing homes and to lessen the risk of spreading of the
virus to people who could be at high risk for severe complications.
Preventing The Flu
To prevent flu infection and its complications, you may require
influenza treatment such as annual immunization with a flu
shot or Flumist and the annual rate of vaccination is low
for people who are less than 65 years of age and who might
be at the high risk of developing the flu.
There are certain programs which offer flu shots during the
months of October and November for less cost. Besides, visiting
one’s health professional during these months is also
a good time to get influenza treatment in the form of a flu
shot. There are generally four antiviral drugs called amantadine,
rimantadine, canamavir and oseltamivir which can be used for
influenza treatment. One has to take these drugs within two
days of falling ill and if taken on time, these drugs will
greatly eliminate the symptoms and may lessen the time one
is ill for by a day or two and it is also helpful in making
the sickness less infectious. These drugs could be prescribed
by a doctor and be used for three to five consecutive days
and are believed to be 70% to 90% successful in preventing
healthy adults from contracting influenza.
While all four of these drugs may be useful for influenza
treatment especially for influenza A virus, only oseltamivir
and zanamivir can be used for treating influenza B virus.
The function of these drugs, which are also known as neuraminidase
inhibitors, is that they block the viral neuraminidase to
function and these drugs are available only by prescription.
Influenza treatment with the use of antiviral drugs is most
often used to control influenza outbreak from nursing homes
or in hospital wards where people are at greater risk for
complications from influenza, through close contact. Antiviral
drugs are also used on cruise ships and like settings for
influenza treatment to help control the breaking out of influenza.
