Introduction to Sleep

Do You Love To Sleep? How Much Do You Know About Sleep? Do You Know That There Are In Fact Many Theories Behind Sleep?

Sleep is something that we do as long as we live, right from the moment we are born until the moment we die. In fact, for an average life span, a person spends about 27 years asleep!

Sleep is such a natural tendency that we do not really think about it very much. When we do think about sleep, it's usually because we lack of it or because we feel the need for more sleep. .

Sleep is in fact a very controversial topic as there are countless differences of opinion as to why we sleep, how much is the ideal amount of sleep, where we sleep, what makes the ideal sleep environment, why we don't sleep enough and why we sleep too much.

The general agreement is that sleep is necessary or else we wouldn't spend so much of our lives doing it. Most of us also agree that sleep is our way of giving our minds and our bodies a rest.

Conclusions from the earliest studies about sleep made a point that the body enters a state of near paralysis during which time little activity goes on. This belief changed radically when studies began focusing on brain activity. The awareness that brain activity did not stop during the sleep state but instead our brain proved to be highly active and organized and executed several physiological processes is what we refer to today as REM or Rapid Eye Movement sleep.

Sleep is considred to be the body's way of recharging after a busy day. Some would argue that sleeping is a waste of time and that there are ways to train ourselves to live on with much less sleep.

Most of us can miss one night's sleep and still function rather normally the next day. In fact, doctors do it all the time. There may be an increase in irritability and perhaps some trouble staying focused, but overall, the body and the mind will still be functional.

However, when sleep is deprived, there is a noticeable decline in the mind's capabilities, especially the areas that control our language, our memories and our ability to plan. The symptoms that appear are quite similar to the symptoms that develop after consuming excess amounts of alcohol including slowed reactions and impaired rationalization skills. When one is extremely deprived from sleep, an individual faces an increased risk of becoming involved in an accident.

Besides the risks and dangers of the above mentioned, lacking of sleep can also cause problems properly regulating body temperature and can cause metabolism to increase. If you spend several days awake, you will start to have hallucinations. All these facts make us realize that we seem to really need sleep.

There are a couple of popular theories to support the need for sleep, which are:

• Sleep is a restorative process.
• Sleep enhances the brain's ability to remember.
• Sleep is a way to conserve and recharge energy.
• Sleep is a way to keep us safe and alert from predators.

Therefore, it is important that we can a good night sleep and wake up fresh tomorrow! If snoring is a problem that constantly disturbs the quality of your sleep, then, you will need to find snoring relief to resume a good nightĄ¯s sleep.
