Weight Loss With Jenny Craig.

Actress Kirstie Alley hit the headlines when she lost 50 pounds by following the Jenny Craig weight loss program. And hence, Alley has become the spoke person for the nutrition system.

Now, let’s look at what Jenny Craig is all about and whether the weight loss program is a sure-fire way to lose weight. The company website states that Jenny Craig is one of the most popular weight loss programs in the country. And the company managers say that the program focuses good nutrition and moderate activity. Therefore, company executives claim that individuals will be able to achieve their weight loss goals by just carefully following the program.

Jenny Craig has more than 600 locations in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico. When you join their program, you will receive a weight loss instruction book and through their online bulletin board, you can locate a weight loss partner.

There are two general approaches that this program offers. For the first approach, you report to a Jenny Craig Center, where you’ll receive individual consultations. Then, the consultant will work with you to design your daily menus. You can just buy the diet food directly from the company. And then, there is the second approach which is an at-home program where you have phone conversations with your consultant. You then order your food every two weeks, with menus and other materials delivered to your home, within five to seven days after your order has been placed. Of course, your consultant will take you through the program, monitor your progress, answer any questions you may have, and attempt to ensure that your experience with Jenny Craig is a positive one.

Calorie counts on Jenny Craig vary on each individual requirement, but the daily calorie level intake will be at least 1200. By sticking though the program, you should be able to lose at least a pound a week or one percent of your total weight. The menus are designed based on the specifications of the Department of Agriculture’s Food Pyramid. There are 70 different foods for you to select from.The food has received the seal of approval from Jenny Craig’s Medical Advisory Panel.

In her autobiography, entitled The Jenny Craig Story, Craig stated, “When somebody makes a decision to go on a diet…they become almost totally preoccupied with food. We decided that if we provided the food, it would let the clients focus on their own bodies.”

The dieticians at Northwestern University, the Jenny Craig system does have its own disadvantages. For example, it does not promote the consumption of fiber, and those who follow the program may not have sufficient intake of iron and zinc. As a result, the program may be difficult for women of child-bearing age who need a great deal of iron in their diet in order to prevent anemia.

Besides, since Jenny Craig supplies the food, clients will not learn to prepare their own low-calorie meals. Hence, once you stop using Jenny Craig, you could find your weight shooting up rapidly. Moreover, Northwestern dieticians say that the company’s counselors have limited training, and their individual consultations with clients are less effective than they could be. On top of that, there is not much support group members from the Jenny Craig’s clients. Since nine out of every ten Jenny Craig customers are women, men may not be comfortable taking part. Jenny Craig’s weight maintenance program is also expensive, which costs about $200 a year.

So, is the Jenny Craig program appropriate for you? Well, the answer actually varies for individuals. If you want to save from the trouble of shopping for your own low-fat food, Jenny Craig offers an attractive option. Also, if you believe in a go-it-alone approach to weight loss, Jenny Craig may be perfectly acceptable. However, you will have to do many researches of other programs before you can decide on one that really suits you.
