Prozac for Anxiety
The Medication for Anxiety
Using Prozac for anxiety is not the most widespread way to
use Prozac. In general, Prozac is prescribed for depression,
but for certain cases, using Prozac for anxiety will help
relieve certain forms of anxiety, which includes obsessive
compulsive disorder and panic attacks.
Usually, Prozac works by evening out the natural occurring
chemicals which give a general feeling of well-being or happiness.
When these chemicals are out of control or have low levels,
depression is usually the result. Hence, using Prozac for
anxiety is usually only prescribed for certain anxiety disorders
such as obsessive compulsive disorder and panic attacks, but
it has been proven effective with many patients.
Regardless of what you are trying to treat with Prozac, it
usually requires a month to two months for your body to benefit
from the medication. Even though it is hard to wait for that
long, if you continue to take Prozac for anxiety at the same
time every day without fail, you will soon see the significant
results after several weeks.
One important warning that your doctor will surely tell you
about is the risks of stopping the medicine suddenly. If you
decide to stop taking Prozac for anxiety any longer, you will
have to slowly scale back your dosage till you are completely
off the medication. Stopping cold turkey can cause significant
problems for your body.
Usually one of the only uses for Prozac for anxiety disorders
is for the victims of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
In general, obsessive compulsive disorder happens when the
mind lingers over certain ideas or thoughts that would be
a fleeting thought for most people. This can include an obsession
with cleanliness and washing your hands constantly; this usually
stems from an obsession with germs, getting dirty or constantly
thinking you will become ill from germs.
Under such circumstances, Prozac for anxiety is usually used
along side behavioral therapy, which is formulated to modify
the mental perception of certain ideas. It might take a while
to retrain yourself about these every day occurrences as normal,
and not harmful. However, most patients respond very well
to behavioral therapy, and if needed, your doctor will prescribe
Prozac for anxiety while you are in therapy.
Prozac for anxiety is not available over the counter, and
will have to be prescribed by your doctor. Consulting with
your doctor about your condition can help you regain control
of your life and have a better quality of life on the whole.
Prozac for anxiety is not a magic cure all, but it can be
a legitimate option when trying to overcome certain anxiety
disorders.
