Recording Stress and Stressors As A Means To Reduce
Stress
When a stressor presents a potential threat, which is when
we feel stressed. And, when the stress becomes too overpowering,
it will hinder our ability to see a way out of the situation.
To handle such problem, recording your thoughts and emotions,
will help you to find a source of relief because you will
be able to review your thoughts and decisions when stressors
occurred. When you review it later, you will how to know which
method will help you to minimize your stressors.
You can start by practicing this, spend a few minutes everyday
to record and review your situations to see if there are areas
that you can focus on so that you learn from your mistakes.
Besides, you can do an expectation list where you list down
your own expectations. A simple example would be, if you are
saying I have to be at work by 7am then you are placing a
responsibility on yourself. But, this also doubts yourself,
because you have to rely on a checklist to discipline yourself.
But, this can help us to minimize our thinking patterns and
learn to trust ourselves.
From here, you will have to learn to talk to yourself, because
the purpose of the list is to make us think. When you notice
there is an area that causes you stress, then you can decide
if this can be eliminated. Do you need to remind keep reminding
yourself that you have to be work by 7am everyday? Have you
failed to meet your boss’s expectations in the past?
Are you a responsible person? If you have always been responsible,
and never let your boss down, then why should you worry about
something that might not happen at all?
As we can see, talking to yourself plays a part in recording
your stress and stressors. Self-talk means the ability or
skill to rely on your efforts without another individual instructing
you. It helps you to explore your emotions and understand
yourself better when the subconscious becomes active. Here
is a list of expectations and techniques to perform self-talk
to help you grasp hold of the potentials when you practice
the techniques.
“I have to be at the bank before five or I am in big
trouble.” We can withdraw the words ‘have to’
and ‘big trouble’ since this is the major stressors.
Can we rephrase the sentence to provide us a more effective
source for minimizing stress? Well, we can. “I really
need to make it to the bank by five so that I can take care
of my other responsibilities, however, if I can’t make
it, I will do it first in the morning.”
As you can see, We still have expectation, we are aware of
our demands but at the same time we also know that we may
not able to complete the task today. Therefore, we don’t
demand ourselves too much for things that we cannot do, but
we have a choice to handle it later. So once you rephrased
the sentence, you will have a more relaxing mind. From here,
we understand that recording all our stress and stressors,
learning self-talk techniques is where stress management works
best.
