Tips In Shopping Your Way to Weight Loss
Although shopping is not exactly an exercise, but it can
certainly help you to shed the pounds, if you follow the rules.
What you buy always depends on what you will eat. Hence, if
you want to maintain a healthy diet at home, always do some
advanced planning before heading out to the supermarket.
The key secret to weight loss depends on your shopping list.
Spend some time to find out your nutritional needs. For example,
a healthy diet might include breads and cereals, dairy products,
vegetables and fruits, along with meat, fish and poultry.
But of course, it is important that you decide on exactly
which products to buy within each food category.
You can choose whole wheat bread and whole wheat cereals
rather than purchasing white bread or cereals with little
fiber. Give the whole milk and whole milk yogurt a go and
buy non-fat milk and yogurt instead. Avoid iceberg lettuce
and opt for Romaine as well as choosing fresh fruit rather
than fruit in heavy syrup. If you are tempted to buy fried
chicken, bacon or spareribs, choose those with low fat instead,
such as baked chicken, lean hamburger, and grilled fish.
It’s a good idea to go grocery shopping when you have
just taken a full meal. Otherwise, your hunger could lead
you to buying junk food and other unhealthy snacks. You are
more likely to think clearer on a full stomach, and reduce
the chances of buying food on impulse. And also, do not buy
more food than you need. Otherwise, you will have a powerful
incentive to overeat.
Before you go shopping, you might want to find out the layout
of the supermarket. Find where you need to get your list done,
instead of browsing shelf by shelf and end up buying fattening
food. Of course, it may take some extra time to “scope
out” the supermarket, but it will be well worth the
effort, if it results in weight loss.
If it is possible, you should buy individually packaged food.
These single servings will help you to control your portion.
For example, if you feel you must indulge in chips, you will
be far better off if you buy a single-serving bag rather than
the family pack. Keep this simple fact in mind: large portions
equal weight gain.
It might actually be a better idea to avoid shopping with
coupons. Coupons will tempt you to buy high-calorie items
that you might otherwise pass up. Although all of us like
good bargains, you would not want to end up paying for that
deal by piling pounds on yourself. It’s a sad fact that
it is almost never a coupon for fresh fruit and vegetables.
Think of this: You will end up saving money if you eat “fresh”
because you will not have to invest in additional clothes.
When you’re considering the types of food to buy, always
concentrate on the product labels. From the nutritional information,
you will be able to find great deal of nutritional information,
stating fat content, calorie content, portion size, and vitamin
and mineral content. If you end up buying the product, you
should serve the item based on the suggested portion size.
So, if a portion equals one-half cup, don’t go for two
cups. So, you should be treating food as if it’s a medication
that can only be used as stated. Through this practice, you
should avoid the weight loss that comes with overeating.
It is interesting to point out that the American Institute
for Cancer Research found out that only 12 percent of shoppers
determined portion size by using the label. And hence, we
can see that paying attention to nutrition labels is a counter-cultural
thing to do. You should try to make it as your habit. If not,
you could end up with far more fat than you bargained for.
You may be surprised to see the weight loss just by diligent
shopping. With some planning in advanced, it can help you
to lose weight. And you might actually save yourself some
money given the fact that you don’t need expensive snacks
anymore.
