South Beach Diet

Is The South Beach Diet Answer To My Weight Issue?

Undeniably, the South Beach Diet is one of the most publicized diets of recent years. Developed by a Florida cardiologist, Arthur Agatston, the South Beach diet emphasizes on natural foods, ‘good’ carbohydrates, and ‘good’ fats.

In short, this diet has the potential for us to develop healthy life, due to the fact that it emphasizes the consumption of natural foods, which means food that are as close to their natural form as possible. This is why you shouldn’t feel deprived while following the South Beach Diet, and you there will be no risks of nutritional deficiencies following this diet.

What are ‘good’ carbohydrates? Basically, good carbohydrates refer to those that are close to their natural form, and not refined. Generally, ‘white’ carbohydrates are the less desirable ones if based on the theory about nutrition. So, brown rice is considered healthier than white rice. The problem is that, the white foods tend to raise insulin resistance. They rouse an insulin response the same way as the sugar does, and, eventually, you will see the results. When the insulin response is worn out due to its excessive usage, it stops functioning. When this happens, it becomes a big problem as it can lead to diabetes and heart problems as well as weight gain around the stomach area.

Eating the good carbs help to stabilize the insulin response. This is one way in which the South Beach Diet is a big improvement compared to other diets such as Atkins, which limits all carbohydrates. Eliminating carbs altogether often make us feel deprived, and as a result, we might end up eating more than our fair or healthy share of saturated fats. When carbs are allowed, then your diet is more varied. Also, the ‘whole’ or unrefined carbohydrates will add a lot of vitamins and minerals to your diet that may be lacking in other popular diets.

As far as ‘good fats’ go, it means fats that carry essential acids such as omega 3’s and omega 6’s, and minimize saturated fats, which are categorized as bad for your heart. Your cholesterol level will be controlled since foods with trans-fats are eliminated altogether. South Beach Diet is different from other diets in the sense that it does not eliminate drastically in fats and carbs.

If you eliminate fats altogether from your diet, it is higher chance and possibility that you are feeling deprived, and when you feel deprived, you are more likely to cheat.

The other component of this diet if fruit, in the South Beach diet, you are required to eat a lot of fruit and this is another source of good carbs. Also, the sugar in the fruit will keep you from feeling deprived, and keep you in track in the long term. Sometimes this diet has been criticized for its inclusion of tropical fruit, which tends to be high in sugar. However, the diet argues, the benefits from eating this type of fruit outweigh the corresponding risks.

Due to the fact that fats aren’t eliminated altogether or drastically cut, the South Beach Diet is not considered as a rapid weight-loss diet. It is more like a diet plan that allows you to lose weight slowly and steadily, and to keep it off over time. It is ultimately a diet plan which promotes overall good health, and help you to develop good eating habits. People do best if they follow a modified version of this diet for life. It is very nutritionally sound.

Sometimes, South Beach diet is confused with Atkins diet. Compared to the Atkins, the South Beach diet is much more balanced than Atkins, and does not cut out any food group except for packaged or processed foods. This is probably one of the most nutritionally sound diets out there, and in a long run, your health can be grearly improved.
