Fat Soluble VS Water Soluble Vitamins. How Are They Different And How To Store Them

Generally, vitamins can be categorized into two groups, which are the water soluble vitamins and fat soluble vitamins, and whether or not our body will absorb the vitamin taken from food also depends on is the type of vitamins.

Our body cannot store water soluble vitamins, this simply means that we need to replenish their water soluble vitamin intake on a daily basis. The eight B vitamins and vitamin C belong to the group of water soluble vitamins and the body cannot store vitamin content that is either of these.

It is not just that our body cannot store vitamins that are water soluble, but also, the water soluble vitamins are easily destroyed by improper storage, handling, or the process of cooking of foods that contain these vitamins. You need to pay attention when you are cooking the vegetables as the water soluble vitamins will be washed out of them. Therefore, you can try light cooking or steaming and by using the water that vegetable have been cooked in to form sauces and gravies so the vitamins can be preserved.

If our body cannot store vitamin C or the other water soluble vitamins, we should make it a point to eat a balanced diet with at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables to make sure that there are enough vitamins available for the body to use when needed and a person does not suffer from a vitamin deficiency due to the body’s inability to store vitamin content.

However, the body can store vitamin content that is fat soluble. The body will store vitamin content in the fat cells so that it can be used when necessary and this is why we need not consume as most of these fat soluble vitamins on as frequent a basis as they do with water soluble vitamins. The fat cells store vitamin A, D, E, and K as these are all fat soluble vitamins.

Besides understanding the types of vitamins, we should also know how to store vitamin supplements the right way to ensure that the beneficial qualities of these are not diminished. Basically, the best way to store vitamin supplements is putting them in a container with a screw top lid and to keep the container in a dry place. When you store vitamin supplements it is also important to check that they have not been kept longer than the expiration date. The vitamin content of supplements will not be guaranteed if you store vitamin tablets past their use by date.
