Stress Coping Skills

Learn how to cope with stress in life to help us to achieve success

Like it or not, all of us have to deal with stress and stress is just part of our life.

Very commonly, stress surfaces when we have analyzed our problems and realize that we do not have solutions to the problems. When we know that solutions might not be available, we will start to be panic reacting to the stressors. The level of stress each of us can bear and how do we handle it differs from individual to individual. So, we need to review ourselves and determine what works best for us. Let’s say, we are granted a promotion in work.

Some might view the promotion as a source of more stress and think negatively while the others may take it proudly and see it as a path to higher achievement. If the person reacts stressfully towards the promotions as more stress will be bound to person, then this person might feel threatened because s/he is worried that his or her performance might not meet the demands.

Actually, it all depends on us to understand about stressors and stress in our lives. If we look take the promotion as good news, and then we will understand that achievement will bring us higher expectations. If we have been mentally prepared to meet higher demands, promotion will be more of a challenge than a threat to us. Let us look at how threats and challenges differ. Threats are either overstated or really existing. It is an expression of meaning to literal malevolence, harm, damage, and sometimes even death.

When we feel threatened, a warning signal will appear in our mind to tell us that potential danger is ahead of us. Challenges sometimes are positive pushes in certain circumstances. Challenges can be defiend as a demand, argument or even a dare. When we are promoted, it is sort of a dare to challenge us to meet higher expectations.

When a person feels threatened by a promotion, it is obvious that the person is aware of what a promotion brings. The person that takes the challenge daringly and run with it may take the promotion as a competition and he or she must finish and win the race. On the other hand, challenges are threats if we were to attend a court due to offences, then our being is at a stake to certain level. This challenge is a test against our physiological activities and we are at risk of being exposed.

As we can see, determining challenges or stress will help us to make better judgment when it comes to decision making. If you have not done any offences to the legal system then being present at a court should not be a threat to you. But, if you had lied to yourself then the stress level will become overpowering. We assume that people who feel threatened by promotion may not understand what challenges mean to them. This person may have lied claiming they were skillful to handle any task given to them, or the person may be lacking of self-confidence and only see failure ahead of them.

If you understand this, you will know that each of us needs different stress management solutions. We need to put our focus on behavior, thinking, negative, emotions, and capabilities. If we see someone with inability to stress management, we can help by pointing it out some facts and solutions to them. Is it the behavior pattern that hinders you from achieving success? Or is it something in your past that you can’t put down? Why do you see promotion as a stress to you? Do you think that you are born to be a failure? These are a series of questions that one can ask
