The Zone, which was originated by Barry Sears, Ph.D, has been known as one of the most revolutionary idea of weight loss. The Zone emphasizes on the idea that we should return to the diets of ancient peoples, which is a diet bases on fruits, vegetables, and meat. The Zone does not deny people carbohydrates, but simply limits their use.

The dieters are encouraged to sharply limit their intake of pasta and potatoes. The Zone is working based on a formula of 40/30/30, meaning 40 percent carbohydrates, 30 percent fat, and 30 percent protein.

There is a physiological basis to the Zone. Dr. Sears designed the diet to restrict the amount of insulin in the body. Large amount of insulin can lead to a build up of fat, causing obesity and other health risks. People who undergo diet programs are encouraged to obtain their carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables and their fat from olive oil and other monounsaturated fats.

No doubt, the biggest advantage to the Zone diet is that it can lead to measurable weight loss. It is also considered healthier than some diets, since it limits the intake of non-nutritious carbohydrates and emphasizes fruits and vegetables. The diet encourages people to eat more frequently, at least every five hours. It is also a low-calorie diet; by follow the Zone, the female dieter will consume only about 1300 calories. The Zone also discourages consumption of junk food, which may be the basis of much weight gain.

Some dieticians follow the Zone religiously while there are some that find it hard to follow. The diet can also be costly, because of it depends a lot on protein products. There are some critics maintain that the Zone as being too complex, forcing dieters to spend too much time trying to do various calculations.

Well, the biggest disadvantage of the Zone is probably its high protein content. Diets like these are often associated with heart disease and are actually condemned by the American Heart Association. The Heart Association questions whether the Zone is actually effective in helping an individual to lose weight over the long term.

People tend to endorse to the Zone because it offers them the opportunity to indulge in foods that would be banned on other diets. Also, the diet is considered more filling than other weight loss plans. However, some people claim that the Zone is unproven. And some people categorize Zone as a fad diet.

Dr. Sears says that people are overweight because of insulin resistance, but, his claims cannot be fully verified. It would appear that people are fat for all sorts of reasons, it could be family history of obesity, bad eating habits, emotional eating, and lack of nutritional knowledge. So, some people say that Dr. Sears’ diet is based upon a false assumption.

The Zone has received several celebrity endorsements. Actresses in Hollywood credit the Zone with helping them to lose weight. Averagely, a dieter can expect to lose about five pounds during the initial two weeks and one pound a week after that introductory period.

There are some critics insisting that the Zone eliminates the fun out of eating. However, the truth of this still depends on individual dieter. As always, you should always consult your doctor first before jumping to any weight loss program. They will closely monitor your progress and can determine whether you are suffering any ill effects as a result of your diet.
