The World Of Diets

Today, the term, diet, is so common that everyone is discussing about it. Due to this fact, it has become confusing for consumers to identify different types of diets. The National Institutes of Health have identified a wide selection of diet plans in existence in the market today. By understanding the types of various diet programs is the first step to losing significant weight.

The fixed menu diet will tell you what to eat and what not in a period of time. This makes it easy on the dieter, since he or she does not have to shop for their own food. But, the obvious disadvantage is also to this type of diet, the dieter will never learn to choose food for themselves. And the diet food you are provided with can be quite bland and boring. If you are a frequent traveler, it might also be hard for you to follow the program. Some of the medical experts recommend ultimately replacing the fixed menu diet with another plan to keep you healthy.

In an exchange diet, you can choose your food from different groups. This also means that from the starch group you could select pasta, rice, or potatoes. Hence the diet offers food variety and it is easier for you to follow while you are on vacation. Such a diet will teach you to learn how to make healthy choices for yourself.

With pre-packaged meal diets, you have to buy food in pre-set portions, so, you will know how much of food you are allowed to consume each day. However, such a program is usually costly and makes food choices for you, so you don’t get the experience of selecting your own meals.

If you go on a formula diet, you will be provided with liquid formulas filled with proteins and carbohydrates and little fat. This type of formula diet is convenient and can be economical. Although the individuals can lose weight over the short term, they may not be able to sustain the weight loss over the long run.

According to federal health officials, questionable diets are those that promote eating a certain combination of foods to lose the fats. While such diets are low-cal, most of them lack valuable nutrients. So it might not be good for a long-term weight loss.

In flexible diets, the dieter be able to decide what type of food he or she will eat and the size of portions. Such diets can be low-fat, low-cal, or both. Such diets may help to cut fat, but the person can be overloaded with sugar.

A study conducted last year indicated that individuals could lose weight through a low-fat, high-carbohydrate approach. The research proved that the pounds could be kept off even without exercising or reducing calories. However, the study was refused by Gary Foster of the University of Pennsylvania’s Weight and Eating Disorders Program, who claimed that consuming large quantities of carbs without cutting calories might lead to a “public health disaster.” But the author of the study insisted that, since fats and carbs might be metabolized differently, reducing calories does not necessarily mean reducing one’s weight. The American Dietetic Association insists that it is possible to lose weight using a number of different approaches.

Due to the variety of weight loss diets, it often confuses others about the effectiveness. Some physicians recommend consulting with a dietician in order to get a personalized weight loss plan. You can consult expert advice for your meal planning, moreover, the plan can be customized to suit your unique nutritional needs.

Generally, all the health experts agree that the best weight loss programs combine diet with exercise. This will make sure you are using food efficiently and at the same time building up strength and muscle. If you have serious doubts about the best way to go about weight loss, it’s best if you talk to your family doctor.
