The Pros & Cons Of The Vegetarian Diet
May you noticed that recently more and more people passing
up the prime rib and baked chicken and go for the vegetarian
meal instead. Vegetarianism seems to be gaining in popularity
each year, spurred on by health concerns, weight issues, and
celebrity endorsements. You may find that a vegetarian diet
to be one of the key elements to weight loss in your particular
case.
First of all, you need to define the vegetarian diet. You
may be surprised to find out that there are actually a variety
of vegetarian diets in use today. In some cases, vegetarians
eat only fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts. In other cases,
they may also eat cheese and drink milk, while in still other
cases, they may eat eggs.
One of the most obvious advantages to the vegetarian diet
is that it tends to be low in fat and cholesterol. So, a vegetarian
diet is actually helpful to prevent heart problems and even
cancer. But, you might find that you are missing some important
vitamins and minerals on a strictly vegetarian diet.
It has been pointed out that the key to a successful vegetarian
diet is by careful planning. Decide what you have to eat every
meal before hand so that you get proper nutrients. Otherwise,
you may end up starving your body of the nutrients you need
in order to be healthy.
A major advantage of the vegetarian diet is that it tends
to involve a healthy serving of fruits and vegetables, together
with whole grains. But it is not easy to get enough protein
and maybe you should add soy to your diet, which is high in
protein content. Make sure that you consume enough spinach
and beans to get enough of iron.
To make sure that you have sufficient B-12, Vitamin D, calcium,
and zinc, you may need some supplements. Otherwise, you’ll
have to load up on cereals, soy milk, spinach, and broccoli.
By being a vegetarian, it does not give you the permission
to eat as many sugary foods as you want. You’ll still
have to limit high-calorie foods.
Variety is known as the spice of life and it is also the
key to an effective vegetarian diet. You can eat all the fruits
and vegetables, and be sure that you only use non-fat or low-fat
milk and cheese. Since eggs are rich in cholesterol, you should
eat them only in moderation.
Studied have proven that vegetarians usually consume fewer
calories each day than meat-eaters. And the vegetarians usually
have lower BMI that the meat eaters. Even as a vegetarian,
you will still need to pay attention to portion control and
calorie counts. Although vegetarianism may not be a universal
remedy for weight loss, it can certainly help in preventing
the bulge.
It is worth mentioning that, some people mistakenly take
vegetarianism as a quick fix to weight loss, thinking that
by giving up on meat for a few weeks they will lose weight,
and, return their old eating habits after the trial period.
This is a bad pattern because it promotes yo-yo dieting. If
you decide to go on a vegetarian diet, it is you have to stick
through it, if not, you may be greatly disappointed in your
weight loss progress.
As we can see, vegetarianism is not exactly suitable for
everyone. If you are good at planning your meals, non-committal
about meat, love fruits and vegetables then this approach
might suit you. Otherwise, just go for other diet plans. All
it takes is determination and commitment to successful weight
loss.
